Undefeated Junior Welterweight Vernon ‘Ice Man’ Paris Signs with Don King Productions

23 11 2011

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla.—Undefeated IBF No. 5-ranked junior welterweight Vernon “Ice Man” Paris (26-0, 15 KOs), from Detroit, today signed a promotional agreement with Don King.

“I can’t find the words to explain how I feel signing to fight for a legend like Don King,” Paris said in King’s South Florida office. “People are now going to see what Vernon Paris is truly capable of.”

King was energized by the exuberance of the 23-year-old fighter, and he also enjoyed speaking to Paris’s father, David, and mother, Rosa.

“I just got off the phone with Vernon’s mother, and Vernon’s father is here with me in my office, so this a real family affair,” King said. “I’ve been watching this young man closely, and Floyd, Manny, Amir Khan, Timmy Bradley and all the rest of them around 140 pounds better watch out. Vernon Paris is just 23, and his enthusiasm and confidence reminds me of Ali. I will set them up, and it’s up to Vernon to keep on winning. I like the path this young man is on. I think he is special.”

Born in Tallahassee, Fla., but raised in the Motor City since age 6, Paris hasn’t suffered a defeat since an amateur loss at 17. His best outing as a professional came on Aug. 5, when he stopped respected contender Tim Coleman with body shots in round seven when they met in California with the USBA junior welterweight title on the line.

A skilled boxer-puncher, Paris is fundamentally sound with a lion’s heart. His strong determination and will to win are his best assets.

“If I can continue to do well, I want to be a role model for the kids in Detroit who are literally killing each other in the streets of our city,” Paris said. “I’ve been shot and stabbed on those streets, and I can show kids that through good things like god, athletics and education you can avoid some of the pitfalls I fell into. If I can make it to a better life, so can others.”

Joseph Agbeko & Abner Mares Rescheduled

10 06 2011

The fight between Joseph Agbeko and Abner Mares that was scheduled for April 23, had to be postponed due to an injury sustained by Joseph Agbeko.  Agbeko was diagnosed in April with sudden onset sciatica, right before the fight,  and has been going through physical therapy in his hometown of Ghana ever since.  He recently completed his physical therapy, and the doctors approved that he is able to begin training for his fight against Abner Mares.  Agbeko is scheduled to return to New York to begin his training sometime next week.  The fight is scheduled for August 13, and will be aired on Showtime.

The two fighter will finally have a chance to defend their belts.  Joseph Agbeko is the current IBF Bantamweight champion, and Abner Mares is the WBC Silver title holder.  This should be a great fight, since they both have their title on the line.  Plus, the last time either of them fought anyone was in December 2010, in Tacoma Washington, during the Bantamweight tournament.

Abner Mares, is an undefeated title holder, from Hawaiian Gardens, California.  He has survived some brutal fights in the past, and proved himself each time.  Mares refused to take any other fight, because he wants to prove he is the best, by defeating the best out there.  This should be a tough fight for the Ghana native, whose last fight went the distance, and he won on a decision.

The location of the fight has yet to be disclosed, but the date is set for August 13, 2011.  It will be aired on Showtime at 10pm EST.  I will keep you posted as the story later unfolds.

Who Is the Next Ali?

5 06 2011

As the convention comes to an end, I wish I had a few more days in Las Vegas. Working the convention with my father I heard plenty of memorable stories. As he rekindled past relationships with old friends, they shared classic stories from past fights. I heard stories of being in Africa for the Ali fight, and other classic fights they attended. It only made me think, what classic fighters are we witnessing now? Am I supposed to compare Floyd Mayweather with Ali? Nobody is Ali, but who would be my Ali, is th point I’m trying to make.

We don’t have that dominant heavyweight that entertains and kicks ass. Mike Tyson was the last to really shine in that weight class. Roy Jones had a buzz, but he only moved up to beat John Ruiz. He wasn’t a true heavyweight. The light heavyweight division is taking over now. They are offering the most exciting fights for “big” guys. The lower weights have always been known to throw hands.

Who do you think is our Ali or Foreman of our time? Leave your comments.

DK Heads to IBF Convention

30 05 2011

Don King is spending his Memorial day with the President of the WBC on his birthday. Today Jose Sulaiman turns 80 years old, and his friend Don wouldn’t miss that for anything. Once Don leaves Mexico, he will travel to Las Vegas for the IBF convention.

Many of Don’s vice presidents and employees are already in Vegas, getting ready for his arrival. This convention is going to have representatives from every promotional company that matters. Saying that, I only hope the promoters come together and work on a way to promote the sport of boxing to the younger generations. Plus, i hope they work out a way to get Manny Pacquiao in the ring with Floyd Mayweather. This is wishful thinking on my behalf, but everyone wants to see who would win. Im not that excited about the Pacquiao/Marquez 3 fight. I already seen that fight, I want to see the two biggest names in boxing today battle for the #1 rank. Who cares about them fighting anyone else.

Let me hear what you think about getting younger generations excited about boxing.

Cloud vs Mack

27 05 2011

IBF Light Heavyweight Champion... Tavoris "Thunder" Cloud

The undefeated IBF light heavyweight champion, Tavoris “Thunder” Cloud, will defend his title against the #1 ranked mandatory challenger, Yusaf “Mack Attack” Mack.  Cloud has an 81% knockout rate, even after two wins by unanimous decisions. Cloud has a plethora of power in both hands, which intimidates a lot of challengers.  Cloud is considered a tough opponent, which may be why a lot of fighters try to avoid him.  The light heavyweight division is full of known fighters, so they can easily avoid Cloud if they really wanted to.  Cloud is an “old-school” fighter at heart, he likes to overwhelm his opponents with brute force and tenacity.  This tactic was very popular with hard-hitting fighters back in the day, like George Foreman, Roberto Duran, and Tommy Hearns.

Yusaf “Mack Attack” Mack, from Philadelphia, went undefeated in his first 24 fights as a middleweight and super middleweight.  After a victory over Otis Griffin, the 31-year-old, light heavyweight  is the mandatory challenger for the IBF belt.  Mack is the reigning USBA light heavyweight champion, and former NABA and NABF light heavyweight champion.

This should be an interesting fight between the two. I used to believe that the fighter who is moving up in weight classes usually has the power disadvantage, but Mack has a strong chin and powerful punch.  I am looking forward to seeing these heavy hitters bang it out in the ring.  I just don’t want to see a boxing version of “dancing with the stars.”
